Chasing Passion Book 3

Selena sat, gazing around unseeingly at the variously attired revellers grouped randomly around the dark garden in which she had found herself. Her thoughts were so confused she was finding it difficult to take in any of the scene: the loud chatter frequently punctuated by raucous laughs, the frenetic strains of the live band standing over in a corner by a huge, illuminated fountain; the various waiters roaming to and fro laden with trays of canapés or glasses of champagne. It was certainly one of the swankiest parties she had ever been to; and none of it seemed to fit at all with Alex’s carefree and supposedly down-to-earth personality. How had he managed to deceive her so utterly?

She shook her head, biting her lip angrily as she attempted to calm herself down. After all, it didn’t really matter if Alex had been lying to her, she told herself. She had not known him for very long; and it would be easy to simply walk out of his life and forget about him and his ridiculous games.

‘Maybe I should just walk out right now,’ she thought; but her musings were suddenly interrupted at that moment by a gigantic crassssh from the dark garden beyond the fountain and the band.

Looking up in fear, she could not help laughing as she realised what it was. More crashes and bangs followed as giant, multi-coloured explosions filled the whole sky: fireworks of the most exquisite beauty Selena had ever seen. Tonight was certainly nowhere near Guy Fawke’s night, and she wondered what the occasion could be that they were celebrating so explosively.

Whatever it was, the display was certainly spectacular and before she knew what she was doing Selena had stood up and moved forwards to get a better look, unable to prevent the spontaneous “ooh”s and “aah”s from bursting from her mouth as she looked on, entranced.

“I never saw a better display,” a large, decisive-sounding woman wearing a skin-tight floor-length gown of lurid pink satin was saying nearby.

“Except once when I was with the Rajah of Tamil,” she added. “We used to sit on the balcony of his palace eating coconut sweets while his courtesans danced for him, you know.”

The fireworks were still coming; thicker and brighter than ever, but although Selena was still watching them intently, she could not help but steal a sidelong glance at the woman. She had never heard anyone so pretentious-sounding in her life and found herself burning with curiosity about the world which the woman seemed to be hinting at; a world so different from Selena’s that she could barely believe it existed outside of fairytales or history books.

As Selena peeked at the woman out of the corner of her eye she was even
